The Russian and US defense ministers broke the silence, discussing about Syria

American and Russian defense ministers talked for the first time in nearly a year, discussing the situation in Syria, where the two sides call their aim the fight against the militants of the "Islamic state", but disagree about the fate of the current authorities choked in a bloody civil war in the country.

The Pentagon said that Ashton Carter and Shoygu agreed to continue the discussion of the "mechanisms for the resolution of the conflict in Syria."

Carter said to Shoygu that the defeat of the "Islamic State" and the provision of political reforms in Syria should take place at the same time, the Pentagon said.

According to Pentagon spokesman, who asked not to disclose his name, Shoygu said that Russia's actions in Syria "have a defensive nature, and they are designed to fulfill the commitments to the Syrian government."

The fact of negotiations was confirmed by the Russian Ministry of Defense, who noted on its website that the conversation lasted about an hour and the parties had time to discuss "the situation in the Middle East in general and the situation in Syria and Iraq in particular."

"The conversation revealed that the views of the parties are close or coincide in the majority of the issues," - says a report.

On Thursday, the White House said that it "remains open to tactical and practical discussions" with Moscow. On Friday, it was confirmed by US Secretary of State John Kerry, who said the talks could begin "very soon".

"The president believes that the military talks is an important next step, and it is hoped that they will be held very soon and will help to determine the various possibilities for planning the next steps in Syria," - Kerry said at a meeting with UAE Foreign Minister, Abdullah bin Zayed, in London.

Russia is ready for dialogue with the United States, including, for Syrian issues, said on Friday the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, to RIA Novosti news agency.

Russia has long been a supplier of arms to Damascus, supporting President Bashar Assad's during the civil war starting from 2011, which turned the country into separate areas controlled by rival armed groups, including the "Islamic state."

The United States strongly condemn Russia's support for Assad. Last year, after the annexation of the Crimea and Moscow's intervention in the conflict in Ukraine, which it denies, the Pentagon has stopped contacts with Russia at the summits.

On Thursday, one of the US officials told Reuters that, in Washington's opinion, on the basis there are about 500 Russian soldiers, although in the past there were about 200 people.

Russian military support for Syria is limited to the supply of military equipment and training of Syrian troops, said on Thursday the Syrian Foreign Minister, Walid Muallem. The Kremlin said on Friday that in case of Syrian request, it will consider the plan to send Russian military there.
